A dynamic positioning system automatically controls a vessel’s position and heading using thrusters, sensors and control systems, helping you operate safely and efficiently without anchoring.

The right solution depends on vessel type, operational profile, class requirements and desired redundancy level. Future operational needs, integration requirements and lifecycle support should also be considered when selecting a system.

Dynamic positioning systems are used on offshore support vessels, construction vessels, research vessels, offshore wind vessels, drillships, naval vessels and other specialised vessels that require precise position keeping.

A DP class defines the level of redundancy and fault tolerance required for a dynamic positioning system. The appropriate class depends on operational requirements, project risk and applicable regulations.

DP classes define the level of redundancy required to maintain vessel position following a fault or failure. DP Class 1 provides basic redundancy, while DP Class 2 and DP Class 3 offer increasing levels of fault tolerance for more demanding and safety-critical operations. The appropriate class depends on operational requirements, project risk and applicable regulations.

Key considerations include operational complexity, positioning accuracy, redundancy requirements, regulatory compliance and future scalability.
